OK, I must admit it’s not quite ice cream making season yet—it’s still winter. But, I can still review this container but putting water in its place.
Let’s start with the container itself. These are the SUMO brand jumbo size containers which contain a little more than one-half gallon of ice cream—in fact 2.5 quarts. The container, available in several colors, are a very heavy-duty plastic in three parts—the lid, the outer liner and most importantly, the inner liner. The inner and outer liners are made to not come apart but act no only as an air barrier to help keep the ice cream from over freezing once you take it out of the freezer and then put it back in after it melts a little, and to keep the inner from losing its shape when it goes from the freezer to the dishwasher. The inner liner is a softer plastic but the total container including the lid is completely dishwasher safe but I suggest you place it on the upper rack of the dishwasher.
The long shape makes it very easy to scoop the ice cream out when using a proper ice cream scoop. The shape also helps in saving space in the freezer since the containers are stackable and easily save room for other items in the freezer. Don’t you know when the round half-gallon ice cream containers take up so much room in the freezer? This easily solves that problem. Stackable and takes of less room is a real winner in my book.
The lid fits very tightly to help avoid freezer burn but I also believe that the air pocket between the outer and inner liners also adds to that same all-to-well-known issues known as freezer burn. It happens and both these characteristics help prevent it.
I am sure when I get around to making ice cream in a couple of months—it gets hot in April in Texas—I will be wanting even more of these. One of the nice things about these is I can put give a friend or family member the ice cream right in the container and get the container back empty and I hope all cleaned and ready for the next batch of ice cream—or even sherbet or sorbet.
I really think that these containers which, by the way also come in the smaller one and one-half quart size, will really never stay empty for long before that will be filled soon after they are emptied and someone’s waist has expanded just a tiny bit. They scored a 5/5 with water that turned to ice, so I know they will score the same score of 5 out of 5 with ice cream. I really could not be happier with these containers and I highly recommend them.
